Household notes
What people said after they took the paper home.
These notes are from sittings in Chehe and nearby tambon. They name the visit, the awkward part, and what the household did with the calendar afterwards.
The installment book was missing its last page, so the map arrived two days later instead of that afternoon. I was annoyed on the ride home. The calendar is on the kitchen wall now, and the water payment has not slipped since March.
We only had an hour and a half. Anan put the uniform on the week before the fee and told us to leave the rice sack until the Friday after. The shop still had rice. That was the whole point, and it was enough.
My brother wanted the split to be equal. The rent is not how we actually live, because I cover the meter in my name. Naree wrote his number and mine as they are, not as a tidy half. He still argues about the market food. The rent line, at least, is quiet.
We had been back from Yala three weeks and the deposit, the first rent, and a meter in the landlord’s name were all in my head at once. The sheet was plain. I wish the sitting had been on a Saturday; I took leave to come on a Thursday.
Anan sat at our table because my mother does not like the motorcycle. He read the Malay note from my uncle without making a fuss and put the remittance on the 10th, which is when we actually send it. The follow-up was a phone call. I would have preferred him back at the table, but the dates were right.
Short. We knew the ordinary month already. The page showed the bus fare and the extra rice sitting on top of the electricity week, and we moved the bus fare to the week before. I do not have a longer story than that. It did the job.
A longer sitting
The Chehe house with school fees and a remittance
A couple with two school-age children came for a Household Bill Map in late April. The bag held electricity, water, rent, a motorcycle book, and a school notice for May. They also sent a fixed sum to the wife’s parents on the 10th, which had never been written next to the bills because it felt like family rather than a payment.
Naree put the remittance on the map as a bill with a date, because the cash left the house on that day whether anyone called it a bill or not. The school notice was split the way the school had agreed on the telephone the week before: half in the first May week, half after the next wage. The rice sack, which they had planned for the same Friday as the uniform, was moved one week later and written on the seasonal margin of the calendar.
At the follow-up they had kept the electricity and missed nothing else, but the second half of the school fee had been paid two days late because the wage itself was late. The calendar’s next month was rewritten with a one-week cushion on the school line. They still keep the original map; the cushion is a pencil note in the margin.
A shared notebook
Two siblings, one meter, rent due on the 5th
Adult brother and sister, one rented house, electricity in the sister’s name, rent collected in cash on the 5th. They had been dividing the rent by memory and arguing when the meter was higher than either expected. They booked a Family Ledger Sitting and both came, which the desk had asked for.
The notebook shows her larger share of the meter and an even split of the rent, which is the agreement they already had and had never written. The weekly opening is Sunday night, after the market. In the second month her brother missed one Sunday; the line was left blank, and he filled the amount the next week without a new quarrel about what the number had been.
They have not asked for a full bill map. The notebook covers only what they share. His motorcycle installment stays in his own book, off the shared page, which is what he wanted in the room.
